The Boeing 717 holds the distinction of being the last commercial aircraft designed by McDonnell Douglas before the 1997 merger with Boeing, originally launched as the MD-95 to modernize the DC-9 family for the 100-seat market. Powered by twin Rolls-Royce BR715 turbofans mounted in the signature rear-fuselage configuration, the 717 was purpose-built for short-haul, high-frequency routes where its hot-and-high performance and quick turnaround capability gave it an edge over competing regional jets. Despite strong operational economics and passenger comfort, Boeing ceased production in 2006 after just 156 aircraft, making it one of the shortest production runs for any modern jetliner. The type found its niche with carriers operating dense island and short-sector networks: Hawaiian Airlines and Delta became the largest operators, with Delta inheriting AirTran's fleet and keeping the 717 in service well into the 2020s.
