The Beechcraft Queen Air 80 is a twin-engine piston utility aircraft that bridged the gap between light twins and turbine-powered business aircraft during the 1960s and 1970s. Developed from the earlier Model 65 Queen Air, the 80-series introduced more powerful Lycoming IGSO-540 engines producing 380 horsepower each, giving it respectable performance for cargo, air ambulance, and small passenger operations in an era before turboprops dominated the regional market. The Queen Air 80 could carry up to nine passengers or substantial cargo loads, making it a workhorse for operators serving remote communities and short-haul routes where jet economics didn't pencil out. With a cruise speed around 200 knots and useful load exceeding 3,000 pounds, it offered genuine twin-engine reliability and cabin space that smaller Beech Barons couldn't match. The type found particular favor with freight operators, air ambulance services, and regional carriers throughout North America, especially in Alaska and the northern tier states where its rugged construction and good short-field performance proved valuable. While production ended in the early 1970s as turboprop King Airs took over the market, a handful of Queen Air 80s remain in commercial service today, primarily with cargo and charter operators who value their simplicity, load-carrying ability, and lower operating costs compared to turbine aircraft.
