The Bellanca 17-30A Viking represents the final evolution of a distinctive American design lineage that began in the 1960s. Built by Bellanca Aircraft Corporation, the Viking series is immediately recognizable by its cruciform tail and semi-cantilever wood-and-fabric wing construction, a throwback to Giuseppe Bellanca's interwar design philosophy emphasizing aerodynamic efficiency over manufacturing simplicity. The 17-30A variant, introduced in the mid-1970s, is powered by a 300-horsepower Continental IO-520 engine, making it one of the most powerful fixed-gear singles of its era with a cruise speed around 175 knots and useful load exceeding 1,400 pounds. What sets the Viking apart from contemporaries like the Bonanza or Cessna 210 is its unusual structural approach: the wing's wooden spar and fabric covering deliver exceptional strength-to-weight ratio but demand meticulous maintenance and inspection for wood rot and fabric deterioration. The type earned a reputation as a capable cross-country machine for pilots willing to accept its quirks, including somewhat heavy control forces and the ongoing care required by mixed-material construction.
