Twin Jet· 249 globally registered

The Bombardier CRJ700 is a stretched derivative of the pioneering CRJ200, designed to bridge the gap between 50-seat regional jets and larger narrowbodies. Introduced in 2001, the CRJ700 seats 66 to 78 passengers and became the backbone of North American regional airline networks, offering mainline carriers a cost-effective way to serve thin routes with jet service. Its distinctive T-tail and rear-mounted General Electric CF34-8C5 engines deliver a maximum cruise speed of Mach 0.85 and a range of approximately 1,500 nautical miles, making it ideal for stage lengths of one to three hours. The type's high-wing loading and relatively fast approach speeds demand precise handling, but its reliability and dispatch rates have made it a workhorse for fee-per-departure regional operators. The CRJ700 competes directly with the Embraer E170 and represents the middle child in Bombardier's CRJ family, which extends from the 50-seat CRJ200 through the 100-seat CRJ1000. While production ended in 2020 as Bombardier exited commercial aviation, the CRJ700 remains ubiquitous across North America, where scope clauses historically limited mainline carriers to operating or purchasing larger jets, creating a protected niche for 70-seat regional aircraft. SkyMeter has tracked 1,214 flights across 230 airframes and 11 operators, with SKYWEST AIRLINES INC the largest observed operator.

Safety in context

The incident rate counts flights with ANY safety event detected by SkyMeter: go-arounds (a routine response, not a failure), unstable-approach gate flags (advisory thresholds), rejected takeoffs (the system working as designed), and runway events. It is NOT an accident rate or fatality rate. For accident statistics, refer to the NTSB Aviation Accident Database (USA) or the Aviation Safety Network. See methodology for what each event type measures.
