Cessna Citation X
Twin Jet
The Cessna Citation X holds the distinction of being the fastest civilian aircraft in production when it debuted in 1996, capable of cruising at Mach 0.92 and briefly touching Mach 0.935 — a speed unmatched by any other business jet until the Gulfstream G650 arrived fifteen years later. Powered by twin Rolls-Royce AE3007C turbofans delivering 6,764 pounds of thrust each, the Citation X was designed for executives who valued time above all else, shaving hours off transcontinental and transatlantic flights. Its swept wing and sleek fuselage gave it a fighter-like profile, and its 3,460-nautical-mile range meant it could connect New York to London or Los Angeles to Hawaii nonstop with eight passengers in the cabin. Cessna achieved this performance without sacrificing the Citation family's reputation for docile handling and relatively modest operating costs, though the X commanded a premium price and required longer runways than its slower siblings. The type remained in production until 2018, when it was succeeded by the Citation X+, which refined the design with improved avionics and a slightly higher cruise speed. Throughout its run, the Citation X attracted owner-pilots, fractional operators, and charter companies seeking the prestige and practicality of near-supersonic business travel. SkyMeter has tracked flights across airframes and operators, with the largest observed operator.
Safety in context
The incident rate counts flights with ANY safety event detected by SkyMeter — go-arounds (a routine response, not a failure), unstable-approach gate flags (advisory thresholds), rejected takeoffs (the system working as designed), and runway events. It is NOT an accident rate or fatality rate. For accident statistics, refer to the NTSB Aviation Accident Database (USA) or the Aviation Safety Network. See methodology for what each event type measures.
