Gulfstream Aerospace Ga-8 Airvan

Single Piston

The Gulfstream Aerospace GA-8 Airvan is a rugged, high-wing utility single designed and manufactured in Australia by GippsAero (acquired by Mahindra Aerospace in 2009, later rebranded under Gulfstream). First certified in 2000, the Airvan was purpose-built for remote operations, skydiving, cargo hauling, and passenger transport in challenging environments where short, unprepared strips are the norm. Its boxy fuselage accommodates up to eight occupants or 1,764 pounds of cargo, and the aircraft's fixed tricycle gear and robust airframe make it a favorite among operators in the Australian Outback, Pacific islands, and African bush. Powered by a 300-horsepower Lycoming IO-540, the Airvan delivers a cruise speed around 110 knots and a range of approximately 800 nautical miles, with excellent short-field performance that allows operations from strips as short as 1,200 feet. The type's large rear cargo door and flat load floor enable rapid reconfiguration between passenger, freight, and parachute missions. While not fast by modern standards, the GA-8's combination of payload flexibility, STOL capability, and straightforward maintenance has earned it a loyal following among charter operators, humanitarian organizations, and skydiving centers worldwide. More than 230 Airvans have been delivered since production began, serving in over 30 countries. SkyMeter has tracked flights across airframes and operators, with the largest observed operator.

Safety in context

The incident rate counts flights with ANY safety event detected by SkyMeter — go-arounds (a routine response, not a failure), unstable-approach gate flags (advisory thresholds), rejected takeoffs (the system working as designed), and runway events. It is NOT an accident rate or fatality rate. For accident statistics, refer to the NTSB Aviation Accident Database (USA) or the Aviation Safety Network. See methodology for what each event type measures.
