The Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker is the backbone of U.S. Air Force aerial refueling operations and one of the longest-serving military aircraft in history, having entered service in 1957. Derived from the Boeing 367-80 prototype that also spawned the 707 airliner, the KC-135 was purpose-built for strategic air refueling during the Cold War, enabling bombers and fighters to extend their range indefinitely. The R-model designation indicates re-engining with modern CFM56 turbofans in the 1980s and 1990s, replacing the original Pratt & Whitney J57 turbojets and dramatically improving fuel efficiency, thrust, and operational capability. With a maximum takeoff weight of 322,500 pounds and the ability to offload roughly 200,000 pounds of fuel per mission, the KC-135R can operate at altitudes up to 50,000 feet and cruise near Mach 0.90, making it one of the fastest tankers in service. The type has supported every major U.S. military operation for over six decades, from Vietnam to the Gulf Wars to ongoing global power projection missions. Despite its age, the Stratotanker remains irreplaceable in the USAF inventory, with no full replacement expected until the 2040s as the KC-46 Pegasus gradually assumes more of the tanker fleet's workload. The aircraft's distinctive flying boom refueling system, operated by a boom operator lying prone in the tail, can transfer fuel at up to 1,000 gallons per minute.
