Learjet Inc. (Bombardier) Learjet 40
Twin Jet
The Learjet 40 is a light business jet developed by Bombardier Aerospace as part of the storied Learjet family, certified in 2004. Designed to fill the gap between the smaller Learjet 31 and the midsize Learjet 45, the Model 40 seats six to seven passengers in a stand-up cabin and is powered by twin Honeywell TFE731-20AR turbofans, each producing 3,500 pounds of thrust. With a maximum cruise speed of 464 knots and a range of approximately 1,800 nautical miles, it serves the owner-flown and charter markets for short-to-medium-haul executive transport across North America and Europe. The type competes directly with the Cessna Citation CJ3 and Embraer Phenom 300 in the light jet segment. Its relatively short field performance—requiring only 3,660 feet for takeoff at maximum weight—makes it suitable for accessing smaller regional airports that larger business jets cannot serve. The Learjet 40 shares its fuselage cross-section and wing design with the Learjet 45 but features a shortened cabin and simplified systems to reduce acquisition and operating costs. Production ended in 2013 as Bombardier consolidated its business jet lineup, but the type remains popular in the pre-owned market for its combination of speed, range, and operating economics. Safety in context
The incident rate counts flights with ANY safety event detected by SkyMeter — go-arounds (a routine response, not a failure), unstable-approach gate flags (advisory thresholds), rejected takeoffs (the system working as designed), and runway events. It is NOT an accident rate or fatality rate. For accident statistics, refer to the NTSB Aviation Accident Database (USA) or the Aviation Safety Network. See methodology for what each event type measures.
