Supermarine Aviation Spitfire
Single Piston
The Supermarine Spitfire is Britain's most iconic fighter aircraft, designed by R.J. Mitchell and first flown in 1936. It became the backbone of RAF Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain in 1940, where its elliptical wings, tight turning radius, and Rolls-Royce Merlin engine proved decisive against the Luftwaffe. Over 20,000 Spitfires were built across two dozen variants, serving in every theater of World War II and remaining in frontline service with some air forces into the 1950s. The Spitfire's combination of speed, climb rate, and maneuverability made it one of the few Allied fighters capable of matching—and often besting—contemporary German aircraft throughout the war. Today, the Spitfire is among the most sought-after warbirds for collectors and airshow operators. Most flying examples are Mk IX or Mk XVI variants, powered by the 1,700-horsepower Merlin engine and capable of speeds exceeding 400 mph. The aircraft's operating envelope includes a service ceiling above 43,000 feet—exceptional for a piston fighter—and a never-exceed speed of 470 knots, though warbird operators typically cruise at more conservative speeds to preserve these irreplaceable airframes. Restoration and maintenance require specialized knowledge of 1940s British engineering, and operating costs reflect the rarity of parts and expertise. SkyMeter has tracked flights across airframes and operators, with the largest observed operator.
Safety in context
The incident rate counts flights with ANY safety event detected by SkyMeter — go-arounds (a routine response, not a failure), unstable-approach gate flags (advisory thresholds), rejected takeoffs (the system working as designed), and runway events. It is NOT an accident rate or fatality rate. For accident statistics, refer to the NTSB Aviation Accident Database (USA) or the Aviation Safety Network. See methodology for what each event type measures.
