Wassmer Aviation Wa-40 Super Iv

Single Piston

The Wassmer WA-40 Super IV is a French four-seat touring aircraft that emerged from the golden age of European general aviation in the mid-1960s. Built by Wassmer Aviation in Issoire, France, the WA-40 represented an evolution of the company's earlier composite construction techniques, featuring a distinctive low-wing design with a retractable tricycle undercarriage and a single Continental IO-360 engine producing 210 horsepower. Wassmer was among the pioneers in using fiberglass and composite materials for light aircraft construction, giving the Super IV a sleek, modern appearance and relatively efficient performance for its era. The type achieved modest success in the European market during the late 1960s and early 1970s, appealing to private owners and flying clubs seeking a capable cross-country tourer with reasonable speed and comfort. With a cruise speed around 140 knots and a range exceeding 600 nautical miles, the WA-40 offered respectable performance comparable to contemporary American designs like the Piper Arrow or Mooney M20, though it never achieved the same production numbers. Today, the Super IV is a rare sight, with only a small number of airframes remaining active in Europe. SkyMeter has tracked 1 flights across 1 airframes and 1 operators, with activity concentrated on routes.

Safety in context

The incident rate counts flights with ANY safety event detected by SkyMeter: go-arounds (a routine response, not a failure), unstable-approach gate flags (advisory thresholds), rejected takeoffs (the system working as designed), and runway events. It is NOT an accident rate or fatality rate. For accident statistics, refer to the NTSB Aviation Accident Database (USA) or the Aviation Safety Network. See methodology for what each event type measures.
