Harbin Aircraft Industry Group Y-12
Twin Turboprop
The Harbin Y-12 is a Chinese twin-turboprop utility aircraft designed for rugged short-field operations in remote regions. First flown in 1982 and entering service in 1985, it was developed by Harbin Aircraft Industry Group to serve China's vast interior provinces where paved runways are scarce. The Y-12 seats 17-19 passengers or carries up to 3,700 pounds of cargo, with a high wing, fixed tricycle gear, and robust construction optimized for unprepared strips, making it a workhorse for regional airlines, charter operators, and government services across Asia and Africa. Powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-27 turboprops, the Y-12 cruises at around 140 knots with a range of approximately 750 nautical miles. Its STOL capability allows operations from runways as short as 1,800 feet, and the type has proven popular for island-hopping, mountain routes, and humanitarian missions where larger aircraft cannot reach. Over 200 have been built across several variants, including the stretched Y-12E and the pressurized Y-12F introduced in the 2000s. While not fast or luxurious, the Y-12 excels in accessibility and reliability under challenging conditions. SkyMeter has tracked flights across airframes and operators, covering routes.
Safety in context
The incident rate counts flights with ANY safety event detected by SkyMeter — go-arounds (a routine response, not a failure), unstable-approach gate flags (advisory thresholds), rejected takeoffs (the system working as designed), and runway events. It is NOT an accident rate or fatality rate. For accident statistics, refer to the NTSB Aviation Accident Database (USA) or the Aviation Safety Network. See methodology for what each event type measures.
