About the Dornier DO-228

The Dornier 228 is a German-designed twin-turboprop utility aircraft that carved out a unique niche as one of the most versatile light transports ever built. First flown in 1981, the DO-228 combined a high-wing configuration with a boxy fuselage optimized for cargo, a rugged fixed landing gear, and exceptional short-field performance that made it equally at home on remote island airstrips, military patrol missions, and regional passenger routes. Dornier's innovative TNT (Tragflügel Neuer Technologie) supercritical wing gave the aircraft unusually benign stall characteristics and efficient cruise performance for its class, while the twin Garrett TPE331 turboprops delivered reliable power in harsh environments from the Arctic to tropical coastlines.

Though production under Dornier ended in the 1990s, the type found new life when Hindustan Aeronautics Limited acquired the design and resumed manufacturing in India, where it serves the Indian Coast Guard, Navy, and civil operators. The DO-228's ability to operate from unpaved strips as short as 2,300 feet, combined with a large rear cargo door and cabin volume unusual for a 19-seat aircraft, made it a favorite for island-hopping services, medical evacuation, maritime patrol, and skydiving operations. Its high wing and excellent visibility also suited aerial survey and environmental monitoring roles.

The type remains in active service worldwide, particularly in regions where runway infrastructure is limited and operational flexibility matters more than speed. Maximum cruise is around 230 knots, with a service ceiling of 28,000 feet and range approaching 1,100 nautical miles with reserves—modest numbers that reflect the aircraft's design priorities of payload capacity, short-field capability, and rugged simplicity over outright performance. SkyMeter has tracked flights across airframes and operators over routes, with the largest observed operator.
