About the Lockheed L-188 Electra
The Lockheed L-188 Electra holds the distinction of being America's only large turboprop airliner to enter widespread service, bridging the gap between piston-powered Constellations and pure jets in the late 1950s. Powered by four Allison 501-D13 turboprops delivering 3,750 shaft horsepower each, the Electra promised jet-like speed with better fuel economy on short and medium routes. Lockheed built 170 airframes between 1957 and 1961, and airlines including Eastern, American, and Northwest operated the type on domestic trunk routes across the United States.
The aircraft's early career was marred by two catastrophic in-flight breakups in 1959 and 1960, traced to a whirl-mode flutter phenomenon in the engine nacelles and wing structure. Lockheed's engineering fix—the Lockheed Electra Achievement Program—strengthened the wings and nacelle mounts, and mandatory speed restrictions were imposed until modifications were complete. The accidents devastated sales and the type never recovered commercially, but the reinforced Electra proved exceptionally durable.
Today the L-188 enjoys a second career as a rugged freighter in remote operations, particularly across northern Canada and Alaska. Its ability to operate from short gravel strips, carry heavy loads in harsh conditions, and keep flying decades past its design life has made it a legend among bush operators. The military derivative, the P-3 Orion maritime patrol aircraft, became one of the most successful military aircraft ever built, with over 750 produced and many still flying today.
SkyMeter has tracked flights across airframes and operators, with the largest observed operator.
