About the British Aerospace BAe Jetstream super 31
The British Aerospace Jetstream 32 is a 19-seat regional turboprop that became the workhorse of short-haul commuter routes across Australia, New Zealand, and parts of Europe from the mid-1980s onward. Developed from the earlier Handley Page Jetstream, the J32 featured more powerful Garrett TPE331-10 engines, a stretched fuselage, and improved systems that made it ideal for thin routes connecting regional cities to major hubs. Its pressurized cabin and ability to operate from short, unpaved strips gave it versatility that pure jets of the era couldn't match at similar economics.
The type carved out a niche in the Australian outback and New Zealand's inter-island services, where its 450-nautical-mile range and 15,000-foot service ceiling allowed reliable operations over challenging terrain and weather. Operators valued its rugged landing gear, rapid turnaround times, and relatively quiet cabin for a turboprop of its generation. While production ended in 1993 after roughly 380 aircraft were built, the J32 remained in frontline service well into the 2010s, particularly with regional carriers serving mining communities and remote townships.
Today the Jetstream 32 is largely retired from scheduled passenger service in favor of newer turboprops like the Saab 340 and ATR 42, though a handful remain active in cargo, charter, and specialty roles. Its reputation for reliability and low operating costs on very short sectors ensured a long operational life, and many airframes logged over 40,000 flight hours before retirement. SkyMeter has tracked flights across airframes and operators, with the largest observed operator.
