About the Robin DR 1050

The Robin DR.1050 Ambassadeur is a French four-seat touring aircraft that emerged from Centre Est Aéronautique (later Avions Pierre Robin) in the late 1960s as part of the successful DR.100 family. Built with a distinctive all-metal construction and a characteristic upswept tail, the DR.1050 was designed as a step-up from the smaller DR.100 Ambassadeur, offering improved payload and comfort for European touring pilots. Powered by a Lycoming O-320 or O-360 engine producing 150 to 180 horsepower, it became a popular choice for flying clubs and private owners across France, Germany, and the United Kingdom throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

The type's straightforward handling characteristics and robust construction made it a reliable trainer and cross-country tourer, though it never achieved the commercial success of contemporaries like the Cessna 172 or Piper Cherokee. With a cruise speed around 125 knots and a range of approximately 600 nautical miles, the DR.1050 offered respectable performance for its class. The aircraft's relatively low operating costs and good short-field performance made it well-suited to smaller European airfields. Production continued through various iterations until the early 1980s, with several hundred examples built.

Today, the DR.1050 remains a fixture on the European general aviation scene, particularly in France and Germany where most surviving airframes are based. The type is appreciated by owners for its solid build quality and straightforward maintenance, though parts availability has become more challenging as the fleet ages. SkyMeter has tracked flights across airframes and operators, with the most frequently observed operator.
