About the Robinson R44
The Robinson R44 is the world's best-selling civilian helicopter, a four-seat light rotorcraft that has dominated the private and training market since its introduction in 1992. Designed by Frank Robinson as a scaled-up successor to the two-seat R22, the R44 uses a Lycoming O-540 six-cylinder piston engine (later upgraded to the fuel-injected IO-540 in the Raven II variant) to deliver a practical blend of performance, economy, and simplicity. With a maximum cruise speed around 110 knots and a range of approximately 300 nautical miles, it occupies the sweet spot for flight training, aerial photography, pipeline patrol, and personal transport where turbine helicopters would be prohibitively expensive.
The R44's two-bladed teetering rotor system and lightweight aluminum airframe keep operating costs remarkably low, making rotorcraft ownership accessible to thousands of pilots who would otherwise be priced out of the market. Its never-exceed speed of 130 knots and service ceiling near 14,000 feet provide adequate margins for most civilian missions, though the type's light weight and piston powerplant mean it's sensitive to density altitude and requires careful weight-and-balance management. More than 6,000 R44s have been delivered worldwide, and the type remains in production at Robinson's Torrance, California factory.
SkyMeter has tracked flights across airframes and operators, with the largest observed operator.
