About the Hawker Siddeley HS 748

The Hawker Siddeley HS 748 is a British twin-turboprop short-haul transport that became one of the most successful regional airliners of the 1960s and 1970s, with over 380 built between 1960 and 1988. Designed as a DC-3 replacement, the 748 featured two Rolls-Royce Dart turboprops and a rugged airframe optimized for operations from unpaved and short runways in developing regions. Its high wing, fixed landing gear on early variants, and excellent hot-and-high performance made it ideal for military transport, VIP duties, and remote regional routes across Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

The type was license-produced in India by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited as the HAL 748, with the Indian Air Force operating the largest military fleet for decades in transport, navigation training, and VIP roles. The aircraft's rugged construction and simple systems allowed it to thrive in harsh environments where more sophisticated types struggled. Typical cruise speed was around 245 knots at 15,000 feet, with a range of approximately 1,200 nautical miles carrying 40-58 passengers.

The 748's operational ceiling of 25,000 feet and ability to operate from strips as short as 3,000 feet made it a workhorse for military airlift and humanitarian missions throughout the Cold War era. Though largely retired from commercial service by the 2000s, military operators including the Indian Air Force continued flying the type into the 2020s. SkyMeter has tracked flights across airframes and operators, with the largest observed operator.
