About the Aeronca 11 Chief

The Aero Designs Pulsar is an American homebuilt kit aircraft that emerged in the late 1980s as one of the early success stories in the ultralight and light sport aircraft movement. Designed by Mark Brown, the Pulsar was conceived as an efficient, high-wing single-seater (later expanded to side-by-side two-seat variants) that could be built by amateur constructors and flown under ultralight or experimental amateur-built regulations. Its composite construction and sleek lines made it popular among builders seeking modern performance in a compact package, and the design has been produced in several variants including the original Pulsar, Pulsar XP, and Pulsar III.

Most Pulsars are powered by Rotax two-stroke engines in the 50-65 horsepower range, though some builders have opted for four-stroke alternatives. The aircraft's light weight, typically under 600 pounds empty, allows it to meet ultralight definitions in some configurations while offering respectable cruise speeds around 100-110 knots. The high-wing configuration provides excellent visibility and docile handling characteristics, making it accessible to recreational pilots. The type's efficient design delivers fuel economy that appeals to budget-conscious aviators, and its relatively simple systems keep maintenance straightforward for owner-operators.

While never produced in certified form, the Pulsar found a dedicated following in the homebuilt community throughout the 1990s and 2000s. Several hundred kits were sold before production wound down, and a modest number remain active on civil registries today. The design influenced subsequent kit aircraft development and demonstrated that composite construction techniques could be successfully adapted for amateur builders. SkyMeter has tracked flights across airframes and operators, with the largest observed operator.
