About the Beechcraft 17

The Beechcraft Model 17 Staggerwing stands as one of aviation's most distinctive and elegant designs from the golden age of flight. Introduced in 1932, this luxury biplane broke convention with its unusual negative stagger configuration—the lower wing positioned ahead of the upper wing—and fully retractable landing gear, features almost unheard of in biplanes of the era. Powered by radial engines ranging from 225 to 450 horsepower depending on variant, the Staggerwing could cruise at speeds exceeding 200 mph, making it one of the fastest civilian aircraft of the 1930s and capable of outrunning many contemporary military fighters.

Its performance and craftsmanship made it the choice of wealthy executives, racing pilots, and even military brass during World War II, when the U.S. armed forces impressed dozens into service as UC-43 transports and liaison aircraft. The type earned its reputation through numerous racing victories and record-setting flights, including multiple wins at the prestigious Bendix Trophy races.

With its art-deco lines, wood-and-fabric construction, and that unmistakable backward wing arrangement, the Staggerwing became a symbol of pre-war aviation luxury. Only 785 were built across all variants between 1932 and 1949, and today survivors are prized warbirds commanding premium prices at airshows and in private collections. The aircraft's handling characteristics—docile for a high-performance biplane but demanding respect on the ground due to its tailwheel configuration and limited forward visibility—make it a challenging but rewarding type for pilots qualified in vintage taildraggers.

SkyMeter has tracked flights across airframes and operators over routes, with the largest observed operator.
