About the Yakovlev Yak-3
The Yakovlev Yak-3 was one of the smallest and lightest major combat fighters of World War II, entering Soviet service in 1944 as a low-altitude air superiority fighter. Designed by Alexander Yakovlev's bureau, it combined a compact airframe with the 1,300-horsepower Klimov VK-105PF V-12 engine to achieve exceptional maneuverability and climb rate below 13,000 feet. French pilots of the Normandie-Niemen squadron flying for the Soviet Union considered it superior to both the Messerschmitt Bf 109 and Focke-Wulf Fw 190 in turning combat, and the type claimed over 1,000 aerial victories in the final year of the war. Its wooden wing and mixed construction kept weight to just 4,641 pounds empty, giving it a power-to-weight ratio that few contemporaries could match.
The Yak-3's performance envelope was optimized for the Eastern Front's low-altitude battles: maximum speed reached 407 mph at 10,000 feet, and it could climb to 16,400 feet in five minutes. The aircraft's light wing loading and responsive controls made it a formidable dogfighter, though its range of just 405 miles and lack of high-altitude capability limited its operational flexibility. Production ended in 1946 after approximately 4,848 examples, but the type has enjoyed a robust warbird restoration community. Modern airworthy Yak-3s, often powered by Allison V-1710 engines due to scarcity of original Klimovs, appear at airshows worldwide and remain prized for their authentic WWII handling characteristics.
