About the HELIO U-10 Super Courier

The Helio Courier is a high-wing STOL utility aircraft known for one of the most remarkable short-field performances of any production airplane. Developed in the 1950s by Helio Aircraft Company in Massachusetts, the Courier was engineered specifically for bush operations, combining a powerful Lycoming engine with full-span leading-edge slats, large slotted flaps, and an interconnected aileron-rudder system that allowed controlled flight at airspeeds as low as 27 knots. The result was an aircraft that could land in under 300 feet and take off in less than 500, making it ideal for remote airstrips in jungles, mountains, and Arctic tundra where conventional aircraft could not operate.

The H-295 Super Courier and its turbocharged H-395 variant became legendary in missionary aviation circles, serving organizations operating in Papua New Guinea, the Amazon basin, and across Africa. The type's ability to carry four passengers plus cargo into and out of impossibly short strips, often carved from hillsides or forest clearings, made it indispensable for medical evacuations, supply runs, and personnel transport in regions with no road infrastructure. While production ended in the 1970s after roughly 500 aircraft were built, the Courier remains active in bush operations today, prized for capabilities that modern designs have rarely matched.

Its stall speed of 31 knots with full flaps remains among the lowest of any fixed-wing aircraft, and its docile handling at the edge of the flight envelope gave pilots confidence in the most demanding backcountry environments. SkyMeter has tracked flights across airframes and operators, with the largest observed operator.
