About the Eurocopter EC135

The Eurocopter EC135 is a twin-engine light utility helicopter that entered service in 1996, designed jointly by MBB and Kawasaki as an evolution of the BK 117. It became one of the most successful helicopters in its class, particularly dominating the air medical transport and law enforcement markets across North America and Europe. The EC135's fenestron shrouded tail rotor and bearingless main rotor system deliver exceptionally low noise and vibration, making it ideal for urban operations where community acceptance matters.

Its spacious cabin accommodates up to seven occupants, and the type's excellent high-altitude performance and single-engine safety record have made it a preferred platform for mountain rescue services in the Alps and Rockies. The EC135 family includes variants powered by either Pratt & Whitney PW206 or Turbomeca Arrius turboshaft engines, both delivering around 600 shaft horsepower per side. Maximum cruise speed reaches approximately 140 knots, with a never-exceed speed of 151 knots and a service ceiling near 20,000 feet depending on configuration.

Range extends to roughly 370 nautical miles with standard fuel, though most missions are short-haul point-to-point transfers. The type's glass cockpit and advanced avionics were ahead of their time in the mid-1990s, and modern variants feature full IFR capability with dual-channel autopilot. Airbus Helicopters (formerly Eurocopter) continues to produce the EC135 alongside its newer H135 designation, with over 1,400 delivered worldwide.

SkyMeter has tracked flights across airframes and operators, with the largest observed operator.
