About the Aero Commander 500

The Aero Commander 500 series represents one of the most successful light twin-engine business aircraft of the 1950s and 1960s, establishing a reputation for rugged reliability that kept many airframes flying well into the 21st century. Designed by Ted Smith and first flown in 1948, the Commander pioneered the high-wing, twin-engine configuration for corporate transport, offering genuine all-weather capability and multi-engine safety margins at a time when most business aircraft were single-engine taildraggers. The type earned its stripes in demanding roles: Dwight Eisenhower used a Commander as his personal transport during his 1952 presidential campaign, and the military operated hundreds as U-4 and L-26 liaison aircraft.

The 500 series evolved through numerous variants (500, 500A, 500B, 500S) with progressively more powerful engines, eventually reaching 380 hp per side in the 500S Shrike Commander, giving it a cruise speed around 215 knots and a service ceiling of 24,000 feet, impressive performance for a piston twin of its era. Its sturdy construction and docile handling made it a favorite for cargo operations, air ambulance work, and charter services in remote regions where reliability mattered more than speed. While production ended in the early 1980s, the Commander's overbuilt airframe and straightforward systems have allowed many to remain in active service decades later.

SkyMeter has tracked flights across airframes and operators, with the largest observed operator.
