The Robinson R22 is the world's most-produced civilian helicopter, a two-seat piston-powered design that democratized rotorcraft flight when it entered service in 1979. Built by Robinson Helicopter Company in Torrance, California, the R22 was engineered by Frank Robinson to be the first truly affordable helicopter for private owners and flight schools, using a derated Lycoming O-360 piston engine and a minimalist all-aluminum airframe to keep acquisition and operating costs low.
