About the Beech Airliner 99

The Beechcraft 99 Airliner is a twin-turboprop commuter aircraft that became the workhorse of regional airlines and cargo operators from the late 1960s through the 1990s. Developed from the Queen Air and powered by two Pratt & Whitney PT6A-27 engines, the unpressurized BE-99 seated up to 15 passengers and offered exceptional short-field performance and reliability that made it ideal for thin routes and remote airstrips across North America. Beechcraft delivered more than 230 airframes between 1968 and 1987, and the type earned a reputation for rugged dependability in challenging operating environments.

The BE-99's straight wing and fixed landing gear prioritized simplicity and low operating costs over speed, cruising around 240 knots with a range of roughly 700 nautical miles. Its relatively high approach speed of 100 knots and stall characteristics required proficient pilot technique, but the aircraft's PT6 engines provided excellent single-engine performance and hot-and-high capability. The type found a second life in cargo operations after passenger service declined, with many airframes converted for freight, cancelled checks, and small-package express work.

Today the BE-99 remains active primarily in cargo and charter roles, serving niche markets where its combination of payload capacity, short-field capability, and straightforward systems still make economic sense. SkyMeter has tracked flights across airframes and operators, with the largest observed operator.
