Airbus A340-500

Quad Jet

The Airbus A340-500 holds the distinction of being the longest-range commercial airliner ever built at the time of its introduction, capable of flying up to 9,000 nautical miles nonstop, a record that enabled unprecedented ultra-long-haul city pairs like Singapore to New York and Toronto to Hong Kong. Launched in 2002 alongside its shorter sibling the A340-600, the -500 was Airbus's answer to Boeing's 777-200LR in the race for extreme range, stretching the four-engine A340 platform with additional fuel capacity, a slightly shortened fuselage to reduce weight, and Rolls-Royce Trent 553 engines. It entered service with Emirates in 2003 and briefly held the world record for the longest nonstop commercial flight. The type's four-engine configuration offered operational flexibility over remote oceanic routes with relaxed ETOPS restrictions, but rising fuel costs and the efficiency of modern twin-engine widebodies ultimately limited its commercial appeal. Only 34 A340-500s were built before production ended in 2011. Today the type survives primarily in VIP and government service, prized by heads of state and private operators for its unmatched range, spacious cabin potential, and ability to operate from high-altitude airports. Its cruising ceiling of 41,000 feet and maximum operating speed of Mach 0.86 remain competitive, though fuel burn per seat-mile is significantly higher than contemporary twins like the 777-300ER or A350. SkyMeter has tracked 4 flights across 3 airframes and 2 operators over routes, with Government of Turkey the largest observed operator.

Safety in context

The incident rate counts flights with ANY safety event detected by SkyMeter: go-arounds (a routine response, not a failure), unstable-approach gate flags (advisory thresholds), rejected takeoffs (the system working as designed), and runway events. It is NOT an accident rate or fatality rate. For accident statistics, refer to the NTSB Aviation Accident Database (USA) or the Aviation Safety Network. See methodology for what each event type measures.
