The Airbus A340-500 holds the distinction of being the longest-range commercial airliner ever built at the time of its introduction, capable of flying up to 9,000 nautical miles nonstop, a record that enabled unprecedented ultra-long-haul city pairs like Singapore to New York and Toronto to Hong Kong. Launched in 2002 alongside its shorter sibling the A340-600, the -500 was Airbus's answer to Boeing's 777-200LR in the race for extreme range, stretching the four-engine A340 platform with additional fuel capacity, a slightly shortened fuselage to reduce weight, and Rolls-Royce Trent 553 engines. It entered service with Emirates in 2003 and briefly held the world record for the longest nonstop commercial flight.
