The Diamond DA40 Diamond Star is an Austrian-built single-engine composite aircraft that has become one of the world's most popular flight training platforms since its introduction in 1997. Built entirely from carbon fiber and glass fiber reinforced plastic, the DA40 combines exceptional fuel efficiency with benign handling characteristics and outstanding visibility through its bubble canopy. Diamond designed the aircraft around a Lycoming IO-360 engine (later variants use Austro diesel engines), achieving cruise speeds around 140 knots while burning just 6-8 gallons per hour, roughly half the fuel consumption of comparable aluminum trainers.
