The Airbus Helicopters EC135 is a twin-engine light utility helicopter that became the global gold standard for helicopter emergency medical services when it entered service in 1996. Developed jointly by MBB in Germany and Aérospatiale in France before their merger into Eurocopter (now Airbus Helicopters), the EC135 was designed from the outset to excel in the demanding HEMS role, featuring a spacious cabin that accommodates two stretchers and three medical crew, exceptional low-noise characteristics thanks to its fenestron tail rotor and bearingless main rotor system, and outstanding high-altitude performance. What sets the EC135 apart is its combination of safety and operational flexibility. The twin-engine configuration with full Category A performance allows safe flight even after single-engine failure, critical when operating in urban environments or mountainous terrain. Its cruise speed of around 140 knots and never-exceed speed of 155 knots make it fast enough for time-critical medical transports while maintaining excellent handling characteristics. The helicopter's low vibration levels and advanced avionics reduce crew fatigue during long missions, and its compact footprint allows operations from hospital rooftops and confined landing zones that larger helicopters cannot access. Beyond air ambulance work, the EC135 serves in law enforcement, corporate transport, and military training roles worldwide. Its reliability and relatively low operating costs have made it one of the most successful light twin helicopters ever built, with over 1,400 delivered across more than 60 countries. The type remains in production today as the H135, with continuous upgrades to avionics and powerplant options ensuring it stays competitive against newer designs.
