Gulfstream Aerospace G-Ii
Twin Jet
The Gulfstream G-II, introduced in 1966, was the first purpose-built business jet designed for intercontinental range and established Gulfstream as the dominant force in large-cabin corporate aviation. Powered by twin Rolls-Royce Spey turbofans, the G-II could carry eight to nineteen passengers across 4,000 nautical miles at Mach 0.85, a capability that made it the gold standard for Fortune 500 flight departments and heads of state throughout the 1970s and 1980s. The aircraft's spacious stand-up cabin, reliable systems, and transcontinental reach set the template for every Gulfstream that followed. The G-IIB variant, designated G2GL in ICAO coding, incorporated aerodynamic refinements and updated avionics while retaining the classic lines and performance envelope that made the original G-II a legend. Though production ended in 1979 after 256 aircraft were built, many G-IIs remain in service today, prized for their robust construction and relatively low operating costs compared to newer ultra-long-range jets. The type has also served military and government roles, including the U.S. Navy's C-20 transport and NASA's research platforms. SkyMeter has tracked 1 flights across 1 airframes and 1 operators, with BRUCE GERMAIN the largest observed operator.
Safety in context
The incident rate counts flights with ANY safety event detected by SkyMeter — go-arounds (a routine response, not a failure), unstable-approach gate flags (advisory thresholds), rejected takeoffs (the system working as designed), and runway events. It is NOT an accident rate or fatality rate. For accident statistics, refer to the NTSB Aviation Accident Database (USA) or the Aviation Safety Network. See methodology for what each event type measures.
