Harbin Aircraft Industry Group Y-12

Twin Turboprop

The Harbin Y-12 is a Chinese twin-turboprop utility transport designed for rugged operations in remote regions, first flying in 1982 and entering service in 1985. Built by Harbin Aircraft Industry Group in northeastern China, the Y-12 was developed to serve underserved communities across Asia, Africa, and South America where short unprepared strips and harsh conditions are the norm. Its high-wing configuration, fixed tricycle gear, and robust airframe allow operations from grass, gravel, and dirt surfaces as short as 600 meters, making it a workhorse for regional airlines, cargo operators, and government agencies in developing markets. The aircraft seats 17-19 passengers or carries up to 1,700 kg of cargo, powered by Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-27 turboprops that provide reliable performance at hot-and-high airfields where piston twins struggle. Over 200 Y-12s have been delivered worldwide, with operators spanning China, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Zambia, and Peru, where the type's low acquisition cost and simple maintenance appeal to budget-conscious carriers. The Y-12's operating envelope is modest but fit-for-purpose: cruise speeds around 125 knots, service ceiling of 22,960 feet, and range of approximately 770 nautical miles with full payload. While never breaking records, the Y-12 has earned a reputation for going places larger aircraft cannot, serving as a Chinese counterpart to the DHC-6 Twin Otter in the utility transport niche. Safety in context

The incident rate counts flights with ANY safety event detected by SkyMeter — go-arounds (a routine response, not a failure), unstable-approach gate flags (advisory thresholds), rejected takeoffs (the system working as designed), and runway events. It is NOT an accident rate or fatality rate. For accident statistics, refer to the NTSB Aviation Accident Database (USA) or the Aviation Safety Network. See methodology for what each event type measures.
