The Learjet 35 is a light business jet that became one of the most successful corporate aircraft of the 1970s and 1980s, combining transcontinental range with the speed and handling that made the Learjet name synonymous with executive aviation. Introduced in 1973 as a stretched derivative of the Lear 25, the Model 35 added four feet of fuselage length to accommodate eight passengers while retaining the distinctive delta fins and powerful TFE731 turbofans that gave it a maximum cruise speed of 529 mph and a service ceiling of 45,000 feet. The type found a second career in military service as the C-21A, with the U.S. Air Force operating a fleet for operational support airlift, and remains popular today in cargo, air ambulance, and charter roles thanks to its reliability and relatively low operating costs. The 35A variant, certified in 1976, introduced improved engines and increased fuel capacity, extending range to over 2,000 nautical miles and cementing the type's reputation as a workhorse that could operate from short runways while maintaining jet performance. Its combination of speed, range, and cabin comfort made it a favorite among fractional ownership programs and charter operators, and many airframes remain in active service nearly five decades after the type's introduction.
