About the Extra Flugzeugproduktions- und Vertriebs-GmbH Extra EA 500

The Extra EA 500 represents Germany's ambitious entry into the very light jet market of the mid-2000s, designed by aerobatic aircraft specialist Extra Flugzeugproduktions-GmbH. Certified by EASA in 2007, this six-seat twin-jet was engineered to bridge the gap between high-performance piston singles and traditional light jets, powered by two Williams FJ44-3A turbofans producing 1,500 pounds of thrust each. The EA 500 featured a distinctive T-tail configuration, composite construction, and a pressurized cabin capable of reaching FL410, offering owner-pilots jet performance with relatively modest operating costs.

Despite its technical sophistication and a maximum cruise speed of 425 knots, the EA 500 entered a crowded and financially turbulent VLJ market. Production remained extremely limited, with fewer than ten aircraft completed before Extra suspended manufacturing to focus on its core aerobatic aircraft business. The type remains a rare sight in European skies, representing one of the continent's few indigenous light jet programs.
