About the Aermacchi MB-326
The Aermacchi MB-326 is an Italian single-engine jet trainer that became one of the most successful military training aircraft of the Cold War era, with over 800 built between 1957 and 1983. Designed by Ermanno Bazzocchi, the MB-326 pioneered the concept of a simple, affordable jet trainer that could also perform light attack missions, making it attractive to air forces with limited budgets. Its straight wing and docile handling characteristics made it ideal for ab-initio jet training, while underwing hardpoints allowed it to carry rockets, bombs, and gun pods for weapons training and counter-insurgency operations.
The type served with more than a dozen air forces across Europe, Africa, South America, and Australia, where the license-built CAC Macchi variant remained in RAAF service until 2001. The MB-326's sturdy construction and forgiving flight envelope made it popular for civilian warbird operations after military retirement, with several examples now flying in private hands and with flight training organizations. Its single Rolls-Royce Viper turbojet produces 3,410 pounds of thrust, giving the aircraft a maximum speed of 426 knots and a service ceiling of 47,000 feet, impressive performance for a trainer of its generation.
The design's influence extended beyond its own production run, as Aermacchi evolved the concept into the MB-339, which remains in production today. SkyMeter has tracked flights across airframes and operators, with the largest observed operator.
