About the Grumman G-21A

The Grumman G-21 Goose is a twin-engine amphibious flying boat that became one of aviation's most beloved workhorses after its 1937 debut. Originally designed as a commuter aircraft for wealthy Long Islanders shuttling to Manhattan, the Goose found its true calling as a rugged bush plane, coastal patrol aircraft, and island-hopper across the Caribbean, Alaska, and the Pacific. Its boat hull and retractable landing gear gave it unmatched versatility in an era when many remote communities had no runways, only water.

During World War II, the military versions (designated JRF by the Navy and OA-9 by the Army) served in air-sea rescue, anti-submarine patrol, and transport roles, with over 300 built for Allied forces. The Goose's radial engines, high wing, and spacious cabin made it ideal for carrying passengers and cargo into places other aircraft simply couldn't reach. Grumman built 345 Gooses between 1937 and 1945, and the type remained in commercial service well into the 1990s with operators like Chalk's Ocean Airways in Florida and Harbour Air in British Columbia.

Today the Goose is a prized warbird and vintage transport, cherished for its art-deco lines and unmistakable radial engine rumble. Its operating envelope is modest by modern standards—cruise around 160 knots, service ceiling near 21,000 feet—but its ability to land on both water and pavement remains as practical now as it was eight decades ago. SkyMeter has tracked flights across airframes and operators, with the largest observed operator.
