About the Scottish Aviation Bulldog

The Scottish Aviation Bulldog is a two-seat side-by-side military primary trainer that became the Royal Air Force's standard ab initio training aircraft from 1973 through the early 2000s. Developed from the Beagle Pup in the late 1960s, the Bulldog was specifically designed to meet military training requirements with strengthened airframe, improved visibility, and aerobatic capability up to +6/-3g. Over 330 were built at Prestwick between 1971 and 1982, serving air forces in the UK, Sweden, Kenya, Malaysia, and several other nations.

The type earned a reputation for ruggedness and forgiving handling characteristics that made it ideal for teaching basic flying skills and introductory aerobatics. Powered by a 200-horsepower Lycoming IO-360 engine, the Bulldog cruises at around 130 knots with a service ceiling of 16,000 feet and endurance exceeding three hours, modest performance that perfectly suited the training mission. Many retired military examples have found second lives in civilian hands, where they remain popular for aerobatic training, formation flying, and recreational use.

The distinctive bubble canopy and military pedigree make the Bulldog instantly recognizable at airshows across Europe. SkyMeter has tracked flights across airframes and operators, with the largest observed operator.
