About the Thurston TSC-1A Teal

The Thurston Teal is a compact two-seat amphibious aircraft that holds the distinction of being one of the smallest production amphibians ever certified. Designed by David Thurston in the 1960s—the same engineer behind the Colonial Skimmer and Lake amphibians—the Teal was conceived as an affordable flying boat for the private pilot. Its distinctive high-wing configuration, pusher propeller, and retractable landing gear allow it to operate from both water and land, making it a favorite among backcountry and coastal pilots seeking access to remote lakes and harbors.

Powered by a single Lycoming O-235 engine producing just 108 horsepower, the Teal is underpowered by modern standards but remains charming for its simplicity and versatility. Production was limited, with fewer than 30 aircraft built between 1968 and the early 1970s, though plans were sold to homebuilders and several additional examples were completed as amateur-built aircraft. The type's rarity and specialized amphibious capability have made it a collector's item among seaplane enthusiasts.

Its modest cruise speed of around 95 knots and useful load of approximately 500 pounds reflect its role as a recreational aircraft rather than a cross-country traveler, but its ability to land on a sandbar or mountain lake remains unmatched in its weight class. SkyMeter has tracked flights across airframes and operators over routes, with the most frequently observed operator.
