About the Beechcraft U-21

The Beechcraft U-21 Ute is the military designation for variants of the King Air 90 series twin-turboprop utility aircraft, developed in the 1960s for the U.S. Army and Air Force. Built on the proven King Air platform, the U-21 served primarily as a liaison, light cargo, and personnel transport aircraft, with some variants configured for electronic warfare training and reconnaissance support.

The type saw extensive service during the Vietnam War and remained in military inventories through the 1990s, prized for its reliability, short-field performance, and ability to operate from austere airstrips. Powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A turboprops, the U-21 could carry up to eight passengers or equivalent cargo, with a service ceiling around 27,000 feet and a range exceeding 1,000 nautical miles. Its rugged construction and straightforward systems made it popular for utility missions where larger transports were impractical.

Many U-21s have since entered civilian service after military retirement, often retaining their original designator for registration purposes while operating in corporate, charter, or specialized roles. The type's combination of turboprop efficiency, twin-engine redundancy, and King Air lineage has given it enduring appeal in both military surplus and general aviation markets. SkyMeter has tracked flights across airframes and operators, with the largest observed operator.
