Airbus A330-800

Twin Jet

The Airbus A330-800 is the smaller variant of the A330neo family, representing Airbus's effort to modernize its proven widebody twin with new-generation engines and aerodynamic refinements. Launched in 2014 alongside the larger A330-900, the -800 entered service in 2020 with Kuwait Airways, featuring Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines and a distinctive increased wingspan with new wingtip devices borrowed from the A350 program. The type offers a 25 percent improvement in fuel efficiency per seat compared to older A330 variants, with a range of approximately 8,150 nautical miles and seating for 220 to 260 passengers in typical configurations. Despite its technical merits, the A330-800 has struggled commercially in a market dominated by the Boeing 787 and its own stablemate, the A330-900. With fewer than ten aircraft delivered as of 2024, it holds the distinction of being one of the least-ordered widebody variants in modern aviation history. Kuwait Airways remains the launch and primary operator, using the type on medium- to long-haul routes from Kuwait City. The aircraft's operating envelope includes a maximum operating speed of Mach 0.86 and a service ceiling of 41,450 feet, matching the performance characteristics of its more successful sibling while offering slightly better range with reduced passenger capacity. SkyMeter has tracked 66 flights across 6 airframes and 1 operators, covering routes.

Safety in context

The incident rate counts flights with ANY safety event detected by SkyMeter: go-arounds (a routine response, not a failure), unstable-approach gate flags (advisory thresholds), rejected takeoffs (the system working as designed), and runway events. It is NOT an accident rate or fatality rate. For accident statistics, refer to the NTSB Aviation Accident Database (USA) or the Aviation Safety Network. See methodology for what each event type measures.
