Boeing 747-300

Quad Jet

The Boeing 747-400 remains the most successful variant of the iconic 'Queen of the Skies,' introduced in 1989 as a major upgrade over earlier 747 models. Boeing stretched range to over 7,200 nautical miles through winglets that added six feet to each wingtip, a two-crew glass cockpit that eliminated the flight engineer, and more efficient engines. The -400 became the backbone of long-haul international aviation through the 1990s and 2000s, carrying up to 416 passengers in high-density configurations or serving as the world's most capable widebody freighter in its -400F variant. With a maximum takeoff weight of 875,000 pounds and cruising at Mach 0.85 at 45,000 feet, the 747-400 offered unmatched payload-range capability for its era, moving everything from passengers across the Pacific to racehorses, satellites, and entire factory production lines. Though passenger variants have largely retired in favor of more efficient twins like the 777 and 787, the 747-400F remains in widespread cargo service with operators like Atlas Air, Cargolux, and Kalitta Air, where its nose-loading capability and sheer volume make it irreplaceable for outsize freight. The type's distinctive hump, four-engine roar, and graceful profile made it aviation's most recognizable aircraft for over three decades. SkyMeter has tracked flights across airframes and operators, with the largest observed operator.

Safety in context

The incident rate counts flights with ANY safety event detected by SkyMeter: go-arounds (a routine response, not a failure), unstable-approach gate flags (advisory thresholds), rejected takeoffs (the system working as designed), and runway events. It is NOT an accident rate or fatality rate. For accident statistics, refer to the NTSB Aviation Accident Database (USA) or the Aviation Safety Network. See methodology for what each event type measures.
