The Cessna Citation I holds the distinction of being the first production variant in what would become the world's most successful business jet family. Introduced in 1972 as an evolution of the original Citation 500 prototype, it established the template for straight-wing, twin-turbofan light jets optimized for short-field performance and owner-pilot operation. Powered by Pratt & Whitney JT15D-1 engines producing 2,200 pounds of thrust each, the Citation I could operate from runways as short as 3,000 feet and cruise at 400 knots while carrying six passengers in a stand-up cabin. Cessna deliberately positioned it below the faster Learjet 35 and Sabreliner, targeting the owner-flown market with docile handling, simple systems, and relatively low operating costs. The type earned FAA certification under the original Part 23 rules, which allowed lighter structure and simpler systems than later Part 25 jets, contributing to its reputation for straightforward maintenance. Between 1972 and 1985, Cessna delivered 689 Citation I and I/SP (single-pilot) aircraft, many of which remain in active service today as economical entry-level jets for charter operators, flight departments, and private owners. The Citation I's success validated the light-jet concept and directly spawned the Citation II, III, V, and eventually the entire CJ and Latitude families that dominate the segment five decades later.
