Robin Dr 220

Single Piston

The Robin DR 220 is a French four-seat light aircraft built by Centre Est Aéronautique (later Avions Pierre Robin) beginning in the 1960s. Part of the successful DR family that evolved from the Jodel designs, the DR 220 introduced a wider cabin and more powerful engine options compared to earlier two-seat models, making it popular for touring and flight training across Europe. The type features a distinctive low-wing configuration with a sliding canopy and fixed tricycle landing gear, powered by Lycoming engines in the 108–160 hp range depending on variant (the DR 221 Dauphin being the most common). With a maximum takeoff weight around 950 kg (2,094 lb) and cruise speeds near 115 knots, the DR 220 offered respectable cross-country performance for its era while maintaining docile handling characteristics — stall speed with full flaps is approximately 50 knots, and VNE sits at 151 knots. Production continued through various ownership changes into the 1980s, with several hundred examples built. SkyMeter has tracked 60 flights across 7 airframes and 1 operators, covering routes.

Safety in context

The incident rate counts flights with ANY safety event detected by SkyMeter — go-arounds (a routine response, not a failure), unstable-approach gate flags (advisory thresholds), rejected takeoffs (the system working as designed), and runway events. It is NOT an accident rate or fatality rate. For accident statistics, refer to the NTSB Aviation Accident Database (USA) or the Aviation Safety Network. See methodology for what each event type measures.
