Evektor-Aerotechnik Eurostar
Single Piston
The Evektor EV-97 EuroStar is a Czech-built light sport aircraft that has become one of Europe's most successful LSA designs since its introduction in the late 1990s. Manufactured by Evektor-Aerotechnik in Kunovice, Czech Republic, the EuroStar was among the first aircraft certified under both European ultralight regulations and the FAA's new Light-Sport Aircraft category when it launched in 2004. The side-by-side two-seater features a distinctive high-wing configuration with excellent visibility, composite construction, and a choice of Rotax engines that deliver cruise speeds around 100 knots while sipping just 4-5 gallons per hour. What sets the EV-97 apart in the crowded LSA market is its European pedigree and solid build quality, combining the efficiency of ultralight design with handling characteristics that appeal to both flight schools and private owners. The aircraft's 1,320-pound maximum takeoff weight places it right at the LSA limit, and its short-field performance (requiring less than 500 feet for takeoff) makes it practical for operations from smaller airstrips. The EuroStar's stall speed of just 37 knots in landing configuration and docile handling have made it a popular trainer, while its 600-nautical-mile range and enclosed cockpit offer genuine cross-country capability that many ultralights lack. SkyMeter has tracked 699 flights across 108 airframes and 24 operators, with ST LOUIS FLIGHT TRAINING LLC the largest observed operator.
Safety in context
The incident rate counts flights with ANY safety event detected by SkyMeter: go-arounds (a routine response, not a failure), unstable-approach gate flags (advisory thresholds), rejected takeoffs (the system working as designed), and runway events. It is NOT an accident rate or fatality rate. For accident statistics, refer to the NTSB Aviation Accident Database (USA) or the Aviation Safety Network. See methodology for what each event type measures.
