The Airbus C-295 is a twin-turboprop tactical military transport designed for short-field operations, troop deployment, cargo airlift, and maritime patrol. Developed in the late 1990s as a stretched, more powerful successor to the CASA/IPTN CN-235, the C-295 first flew in 1997 and entered service with the Spanish Air Force in 2001. Powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127G turboprops producing 2,645 shaft horsepower each, it combines rugged construction with modern avionics and can operate from unpaved strips as short as 2,200 feet. The aircraft's rear cargo ramp and pressurized cabin allow it to carry up to 71 troops, 50 paratroopers, or nine tons of freight, making it a versatile workhorse for air forces in over 30 countries. Its high wing and strong landing gear enable operations in austere environments, from desert forward bases to remote island airstrips, while its relatively low operating costs have made it popular with smaller nations seeking affordable tactical airlift. The C-295 has also been adapted for specialized roles including maritime patrol (with search radar and sensor pods), airborne early warning, and firefighting, demonstrating the platform's flexibility. With a maximum cruise speed around 260 knots and a range exceeding 3,000 nautical miles with maximum fuel, it occupies a sweet spot between smaller utility transports and larger strategic airlifters like the C-130 Hercules.
