Cessna 206 Stationair

Single Piston· 2,241 globally registered

The Cessna 206 Stationair is one of general aviation's most versatile workhorses, a high-wing single-engine piston aircraft that has served bush pilots, skydiving operations, cargo haulers, and family flyers since 1962. Built as a stretched, more powerful variant of the Cessna 182, the 206 trades the 182's four seats for six and adds a large rear cargo door, making it equally at home dropping parachutists over the desert, hauling supplies to remote Alaskan villages, or ferrying tourists over the Grand Canyon. Its rugged fixed landing gear, forgiving handling, and ability to operate from short unpaved strips have made it a staple in back-country and utility roles worldwide. Powered by a 300-horsepower Continental IO-520 engine, the Stationair cruises around 150 knots and can carry over 1,200 pounds of payload when lightly fueled. The type remains in production today as the Cessna T206 Turbo Stationair, now with a turbocharged engine and Garmin glass cockpit, a testament to the enduring utility of the original design. Over 8,500 Cessna 206s have been built across all variants, and the type is a common sight at small airports and remote airstrips on every continent. SkyMeter has tracked 687 flights across 179 airframes and 119 operators, with BANK OF UTAH TRUSTEE the largest observed operator.

Safety in context

The incident rate counts flights with ANY safety event detected by SkyMeter: go-arounds (a routine response, not a failure), unstable-approach gate flags (advisory thresholds), rejected takeoffs (the system working as designed), and runway events. It is NOT an accident rate or fatality rate. For accident statistics, refer to the NTSB Aviation Accident Database (USA) or the Aviation Safety Network. See methodology for what each event type measures.
