The Airbus A319 is the compact member of the A320 family, launched in 1993 as a direct competitor to the Boeing 737-700. Seating 124 to 156 passengers depending on configuration, it shares the same fuselage cross-section and cockpit as its larger siblings but with a fuselage shortened by 3.77 meters, making it ideal for thinner routes and operations into airports with shorter runways or noise restrictions. The type entered service with Swissair in 1996 and quickly became popular with both legacy carriers and low-cost airlines seeking flexibility without sacrificing the commonality benefits of the A320 family. Its range of approximately 3,700 nautical miles allows nonstop transcontinental flights across North America and transatlantic hops from the East Coast to Western Europe. The A319 introduced the corporate jet variant ACJ319, favored by governments and private operators for its combination of range, cabin space, and operating economics. While Airbus has since shifted production focus to the re-engined A319neo, the classic A319ceo remains a workhorse for airlines worldwide, prized for its versatility in both high-frequency shuttle markets and longer thin routes where a larger narrowbody would fly half-empty. Its operating envelope mirrors the A320's (Mmo 0.82, service ceiling 39,800 feet), with slightly better field performance thanks to lower weight. SkyMeter has tracked flights across airframes and operators, with the largest observed operator.

Safety in context

The incident rate counts flights with ANY safety event detected by SkyMeter: go-arounds (a routine response, not a failure), unstable-approach gate flags (advisory thresholds), rejected takeoffs (the system working as designed), and runway events. It is NOT an accident rate or fatality rate. For accident statistics, refer to the NTSB Aviation Accident Database (USA) or the Aviation Safety Network. See methodology for what each event type measures.
