Airbus A321 Neo

Twin Jet· 106 globally registered

The Airbus A321neo is the stretched, re-engined variant of the A320 family and the best-selling single-aisle airliner in production today. Launched in 2010 and entering service in 2016, the neo (new engine option) pairs the A321's fuselage with either CFM LEAP-1A or Pratt & Whitney PW1100G geared turbofans, delivering 15-20% better fuel efficiency and significantly lower noise than the original ceo (current engine option) models. With seating for 180-220 passengers in typical two-class layouts and a range exceeding 4,000 nautical miles in the long-range A321LR and A321XLR configurations, it has become the workhorse of choice for low-cost carriers and legacy airlines alike, bridging the gap between narrowbody efficiency and widebody range on transatlantic and transcontinental routes. The A321neo's success stems from its versatility: it can operate dense short-haul European shuttles, serve thin long-haul markets that don't justify a widebody, and slot smoothly into existing A320-family fleets with common type ratings and ground equipment. Its maximum takeoff weight of 206,132 pounds and cruise speed of Mach 0.78 make it competitive with the Boeing 737 MAX 10, though the Airbus holds a commanding lead in orders and deliveries. The type has proven especially popular in India, the Middle East, and North America, where carriers prize its combination of capacity, range, and operating economics. SkyMeter has tracked 41,637 flights across 1,896 airframes and 26 operators, with BANK OF UTAH TRUSTEE the largest observed operator.

Safety in context

The incident rate counts flights with ANY safety event detected by SkyMeter: go-arounds (a routine response, not a failure), unstable-approach gate flags (advisory thresholds), rejected takeoffs (the system working as designed), and runway events. It is NOT an accident rate or fatality rate. For accident statistics, refer to the NTSB Aviation Accident Database (USA) or the Aviation Safety Network. See methodology for what each event type measures.
